The England cricket team toured Australia in the 1970-71 season to play a six-match Test series against Australia for The Ashes. The tour was organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club and the team played non-Test matches under the M.C.C. name. Ray Illingworth's England won the series 2-0 with four matches drawn and one abandoned, and regained the Ashes after twelve years. "The Momentous Series of 1970-71". was pivotal in Test and One Day International cricket history and "essentially ushered in the modern period of Test cricket". The first One Day International in cricket was played between the teams, a result of the first four days of the Third Test at Melbourne being washed out, and Australia won by 5 wickets. Therefore both the first Test Match and the first One Day International were won by Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It is the only time a touring team has played a full Test series in Australia without losing a Test and the third and last time that Australia hosted a Test series without winning a Test in the season, the others being in 1886-87 and 1887-88.
