The Lebel rifle has the distinction of being the first rifle designed to use nitrocellulose-based the first practical smokeless gunpowder which had been invented by Paul Vieille in 1884. The Lebel was also the first military rifle to introduce, in 1901, a boat-tailed bullet as standard ammunition. "Balle D"'s better ballistic properties extended the extreme range of the Lebel rifle beyond 4000 yards.
