The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Class 6400 diesel locomotives were built by Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK), now Vossloh, from 1988 to 1994. 120 of these locomotives were built, numbered 6401-6520. These locomotives are now property of DB Schenker Rail formerly known as Railion, and operate freight trains, frequently in pairs or in threes. Some locomotives have PZB or Memor installed and are allowed in German or Belgium. These locomotives have the nickname Duitse Herder (German Shepherd) or Vlaamse Reus (Flemish Giant). The first 60 were ordered in 1985 to replace the ageing Class 2200 and 2400. In 1988 another 60 were ordered.
