After completing his MSc in mathematics at the University of Utrecht, Brands obtained his doctorate from the Eindhoven University of Technology; his thesis advisors included Ronald Rivest and Adi Shamir, two of the co-inventors of RSA. In 2002 he founded Credentica to commercialize his user-centric identity technology; Microsoft acquired the technology in 2008, and Brands joined the company at its headquarters in the US in the role of Principal Architect in the Identity And Security Division. Since February 2000, Brands is also Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at McGill University, Canada. Brands is the author of "Rethinking Public Key Infrastructures and Digital Certificates; Building in Privacy.
