This interval is known as a diminished sixth, which is meant to be the enharmonic equivalent to a fifth; however, the interval does not sound the same as the other fifths: it is severely wide and dissonant, and it seems to howl like a wolf (because of the beating). This anomalous interval thus has come to be called the wolf fifth. By extension, any interval which is regarded as howling in like manner may be called a wolf.
