In 1913, he went to Beijing to study at a school of tax studies and, upon graduation, worked for a customs office. Wu had converted to Christianity in his youth. In 1918, he became a member of a Congregational Church and was baptized. In 1924, he worked for YMCA, managing its shools. In 1924, he went to the U.S. to study at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, from which he received a master's degree in philosophy. He was influenced by the social gospel and the ethical teachings of Jesus and not fond of the supernaturally oriented theology of most churches. He had been a YMCA secretary, author, and editor...
