A column in structural engineering is a vertical structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements below. For the purpose of wind or earthquake engineering, columns may be designed to resist lateral forces. Other compression members are often termed "columns" because of the similar stress conditions. Columns are frequently used to support beams or arches on which the upper parts of walls or ceilings rest. In architecture "column" refers to such a structural element that also has certain proportional and decorative features. A column might also be a decorative or triumphant feature but need not be supporting any structure e.g. a statue on top. Данное...

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Comb-drives are capacitive actuators, often used as linear actuators that utilize electrostatic forces that act between two electrically conductive combs. Comb drive actuators typically operate at the micro- or nanometer scale and are generally manufactured by bulk micromachining or surface micromachining a silicon wafer substrate. The attractive electrostatic forces are created when a voltage is applied between the static and moving combs causing them to be drawn together. Данное издание не является оригинальным. Combat engineering is a combat arms role of using the knowledge, tools and techniques of engineering by troops in peace and war, but specifically in combat. A combat engineer, in many armies also called pioneer or sapper, is a military specialist in using the tools and techniques of engineering under combat conditions, who may perform any of a variety of tasks. Such tasks typically include constructing/breaching trenches, tank traps and other fortifications, bunker construction, bridge and road construction or destruction, laying or clearing landmines and general engineering tasks under fire. More generally speaking, the combat engineer's tasks involve facilitating movement and support of friendly forces while impeding that of the enemy....

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A combat helmet is a type of personal armor designed specifically to protect the head during a fight. Helmets are among the oldest forms of personal protective equipment, and are known to have been worn by the Assyrians around 900BC, followed by the ancient Greeks and Romans, throughout the Middle Ages, and up to the end of the 1600s by many combatants. Their materials and construction became more advanced as weapons became more and more powerful. Initially constructed from leather and brass, and then bronze and iron during the Bronze and Iron Ages, they soon came to be made entirely from forged steel in many societies after about 950AD. Combat Zones That See, or CTS, is a project of the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) whose goal is to "track everything that moves" in a city by linking up a massive network of surveillance cameras to a centralized computer system. Artificial intelligence software will then identify and track all movement throughout the city. CTS is described by DARPA as intended for use in combat zones, to deter enemy attacks on American troops and to identify and track enemy combatants who launch attacks against American soldiers. Civil liberties activists believe that such programs have great potential for privacy violations, and have openly opposed the project. Данное издание не является...

A combination lock is a type of lock in which a sequence of numbers or symbols is used to open the lock. The sequence may be entered using a single rotating dial which interacts with several discs or cams, by using a set of several rotating discs with inscribed numerals which directly interact with the locking mechanism, or through an electronic or mechanical keypad. From a mathematical standpoint, "combination" lock is a misnomer, as such locks typically do not require a combination of values to open. A related misconception is that the unlocking code is a permutation; however, the correct term for describing the set of values used to open the lock is sequence. The combine harvester, or simply combine, is a machine that harvests grain crops. It combined into a single operation what previously had taken three separate operations . Among the crops harvested with a combine are wheat, oats, rye, barley, corn (maize), soybeans, and flax (linseed). The waste straw left behind on the field is the remaining dried stems and leaves of the crop with limited nutrients which is either chopped and spread on the field or baled for feed and bedding for livestock. In the dissertation combined reinforcement learning (RL) and simulated annealing (SA) concepts, problems, proposed solutions, algorithms and application examples are shown. RL models a decision maker as a goal-driven agent aiming to reach goal states in the problem representation state space. The agent takes different choices among the numerous possibilities, but each choice can make different impact in the environment. Each decision has some effect being expressed in the form of numeric honor or dishonor, in a reward value. The agent utilizes the feedback to recognize which actions are honored and which are not. The agent then tries to govern its decision sequence into the direction that maximizes the “environment’s satisfaction”....

It is also known as a burner or flame can. In a gas turbine engine, the main combustor or combustion chamber is fed high pressure air by the compression system and feeds the hot, higher pressure exhaust into the turbine components of the engine. In ramjet/scramjet designs, the combustor exhaust is fed directly to the nozzle. Combustors are designed to contain and control the combustion of the fuel-air mixture. The combustor consists of several major components and those components can be incorporated into three major types of combustor, can,...

How can a designer find and understand useful content from previous projects in a corporate repository? Ethnographic observations show that a design reuse system must give an overview to enable users to find reusable designs and must provide tools which allow users to explore the context of those designs. A tool is presented called CoMem which draws ideas from the fields of human-computer interaction, information retrieval and information visualization. CoMem is evaluated using formal user testing and the evaluation results show that CoMem offers greater support for finding and understanding than traditional tools, and reuse using CoMem is consistently rated to be more effective by test participants. This supports the hypothesis that...

Sportswear base layer provides an important function for physiological comfort. This book presents the investigation of base layer winter active sportswear fabrics with good comfort properties, made of natural and synthetic fibres and their blends. Polyester, wool and bamboo fibres were selected for this study. Polyester is the most common fibre used in sportswear, wool is increasingly being used in sportswear and bamboo is a relatively new fibre that offers properties suitable for base layer sportswear. Bamboo is also regarded as a “green” and eco-friendly fibre. Preliminary experiments were carried out to find the liquid moisture transfer performance of knitted fabrics made from each selected single fibre. Experimental single...

The ropeway conveyor ran for 76 km from Moanda in the Haut-Ogooue province of south eastern Gabon to Mbinda in the Republic of Congo. In 1954, the Compagnie Miniere de l'Ogooue (COMILOG), a French-American company formed the previous year, decided to begin mining manganese in the Gabonese town of Moanda. The town lay deep in the rainforest, and export of the metal was a problem. The nearest reliable transport route was the Congo-Ocean Railway, but this lay more than 250km away, across difficult terrain. George Perrineau was charged with constructing a transport link between the two. It was decided to...
