This work aims at finding a framework for the London Clay relating the engineering proprieties of this material to its geological features. Results of tests on samples from different depths in their intact and reconstituted states using oedometer and advanced triaxial apparatus are presented. The structure and the nature of the clay from different strata are investigated and correlated with its large and small strain mechanical response. The development of low-temperature premixed compression ignition (PCI) combustion strategies and the performance of diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) are presented in this work. At moderate loads, low-temperature PCI combustion is shown to significantly reduce engine-out oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and soot emissions compared to a conventional diesel combustion strategy.
